Diversity is an overriding theme when mapping Africa; this is also the case with the provision of merchant services -- from Egypt in the north to the highly developed and largest economy in the region: South Africa. In between are huge swathes of the continent's yet untapped markets where card acceptance is virtually non-existent.
In some countries, such as Kenya, Nigeria and Tunisia, less than one percent of adults own a credit card. Only in South Africa does credit card penetration reach levels seen in more advanced markets of the world. Given this situation, our study focuses on eight markets in the continent where credit card usage and acceptance is comparatively more commonplace. Overall, the report highlights a region with enormous potential: where cash is still king, there is ample opportunity to drive up payment card acceptance and, consequently, merchant revenue.
