A comprehensive overview of the cards, payments and consumer banking market in Switzerland.

  • The Swiss payment cards market is well developed and stable. The debit card market has surpassed the theoretical saturation point with 140 cards per 100 adults at the end of 2014, while there are approximately 86 credit cards per 100 adults.
  • Maestro leads the debit cards market in terms of card numbers with about 70 per cent market share in 2014. However, the network is the second-largest player in terms of debit card billed volume behind Postcard.
  • The proportion of overseas spending on Swiss-issued credit cards is high, with about 49 per cent of credit card POS billed volume and 44 per cent of transactions were made abroad in 2014.
  • Despite credit cards occupying a less prevalent position than debit cards in Switzerland, they remain a profitable business for issuers, with a credit card pre-tax profit of $380 million in 2014.
  • The debt ratio of Swiss households has grown steadily over the past decade. The ratio of total consumer credit to personal disposable income (PDI) increased from 152.5 per cent in 2009 to 167.8 per cent in 2014.
  • Credit card interchange rates continue to fall, declining to an average 1.04 per cent in 2012 from 1.32 per cent at the beginning of 2010.
  • Effective from January 2015, the average interchange fees for Maestro card transactions has been set at $0.35 per transaction. Visa charges an interchange fee of about $0.32.
