A comprehensive overview of the cards, payments and consumer banking market in Poland.

  • In terms of technology, Poland's payment cards market is one of the most advanced in Europe.
  • Issuers have focused on innovation in order to incentivise electronic payments and to reduce the dependence on cash.
  • Poland is one of the leading markets globally for contactless payments. In 2017, over half of all POS transactions in the country were contactless.
  • The popularity of contactless payments suggests great potential for the adoption of mobile payments. A range of mobile contactless payment solutions has been launched by banks, networks and mobile operators.
  • The Polish cards market is dominated by debit cards, with a penetration rate of 93 debit cards per 100 adults in 2017, compared to 19 credit cards (including charge cards) per 100 adults.
  • Debit card purchase volume almost trebled between 2011 and 2017 while the number of purchase transactions quadrupled.
  • The number of Poland credit cards in issue has fallen significantly. There were 6.1 million cards in issue at the end of 2017 compared to 7.3 million in 2011.
  • The dramatic fall in credit card numbers is largely due to a 2010 regulation imposing additional requirements on issuers to ascertain the creditworthiness of new customers.
  • Visa has long been the leading card network in the country, however, Mastercard has been slowly closing the gap and is edging close to parity.
  • Credit card issuing in Poland is competitive, with around 40 issuers in the market. The largest five credit card issuers account for around 60 per cent of cards in issue.
  • There is a significant international presence in Poland's acquiring market. Three US acquirers – Evo Payments, First Data and Elavon – are among the five leading acquirers.
