A comprehensive overview of the cards, payments and consumer banking market in Czech Republic.

CZECH REPUBLIC CARDS & PAYMENTS REPORT | KEY FACTS

  • The Czech Republic's economy performed strongly in 2014 and 2015 and this, coupled with low unemployment, has boosted consumer confidence.
  • The retail banking landscape is characterised by subsidiaries of large European banking groups who face competition from a number of consumer finance companies.
  • Consumer loan outstandings have grown at an average annual rate of five per cent since 2010 with growth driven by a buoyant mortgage market.
  • Debit cards represent 80 per cent of payment cards in circulation and 91 per cent in terms of total billed volume in 2015.
  • Czechs have been the most enthusiastic adopters of contactless technology in Europe, and this has fuelled growth in the use of payment cards.
  • Almost two-thirds of card transactions were contactless in 2015, with these transactions accounting for close to half of total POS billed volume.
  • High levels of non-performing loans have hampered credit card profitability. The NPL ratio on credit card loans grew to over 17 per cent in mid-2016.
  • Mastercard has gained market share in the last decade through securing partnerships with key issuers and is now the dominant network in the country.
  • The republic's credit cards market has traditionally been split between bank and non-bank issuers. This division remains, although some of the non-bank issuers are now operating through banking licenses.
  • Meanwhile, the country's acquiring market is undergoing a transformation as several acquiring banks have sold their acquiring businesses or entered joint ventures with large foreign processors.
